About us

The Swiss Memorial for the victims of National Socialism originated from a civil society initiative in 2019. In 2022, both chambers of the Federal Parliament unanimously voted in favor of establishing a memorial. In 2023, the Federal Council decided to create a memorial site in Bern, under the leadership of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and in cooperation with the City of Bern. Furthermore, it decided to support the planning and realization of a national education center with a cross-border focus in cooperation with the Canton of St. Gallen.

Two closely cooperating associations were founded to establish the Swiss Memorial.

The Network Association

  • supports the planning and establishment of the Diepoldsau Education Center;
  • connects various actors and sites in Switzerland and neighboring countries that address the history of National Socialist crimes;
  • organizes conferences and workshops;
  • operates the website “swissmemorial.ch”.

The Supporting Association

  • plans and supports the operation and further development of the memorial site in Bern;
  • is intended in the long term to be the sponsoring body for the entire Swiss Memorial.
